What changes for distributors when disclosure norms tighten

Most disclosure changes are absorbed by operations. The ones that matter change what you can say in a first meeting.

Every few quarters a disclosure requirement changes, and the immediate reaction inside a distribution business is to route it to operations. Usually that is right. Occasionally it is a mistake, because a small number of disclosure changes do not alter paperwork at all — they alter what can credibly be said in a first meeting.

The test

A useful filter: does the change alter what the client sees before they decide, or only what they receive after? Post-decision disclosure is an operational problem. Pre-decision disclosure is a sales problem, and it needs the people who actually run those conversations in the room.

Commission visibility is the clearest example

When commission moves from a disclosed-on-request footnote to something presented alongside the recommendation, nothing operational has really changed. But the conversation has. A partner who has been explaining value in terms of access and execution will find that argument harder, because the client can now see the cost of it next to the recommendation.

The firms that handle this well tend to have already moved the conversation onto planning and suitability, where the work is visible. The ones that struggle are those whose stated value was implicitly the product itself.

Preparing before it applies

Two things are worth doing ahead of any pre-decision disclosure change. First, rehearse the conversation — if a number is about to become visible, the first client to ask about it should not be the first time anyone has answered. Second, check your own consistency: disclosure changes are uncomfortable mainly where practice has drifted from what the firm would describe as standard.

Neither is a compliance task. Both are considerably cheaper done in advance.
